Who is a female inspiration/role model to you and why?

Two names that instantly come to my mind as role models for me are – Ms Vinita Bali - MD & CEO of Britannia Industries and Mrs Indira Gandhi – Former Prime Minister of India. And I have reasons why they are my inspiration. The achievements of both these remarkable women demonstrate their grit and perseverance.

Vinita Bali – MD & CEO of Britannia Industries

Vinita took the CEO position at Britannia Industries - an Indian food company, where she was eventually appointed as Managing Director. The firm’s revenue tripled under her dynamic leadership. Her business insight led her to the Forbes’ list of “Asia’s 50 Power Businesswomen” in 2011, and she also received their Leadership Award. The Economic Times also honoured her with the “Business Woman of the Year” Award in 2009.

Vinita’s style of working – to lead by example and empathy touched me instantly. She motivates and encourages colleagues instead of commanding and demanding. Her mantra is – leadership is not about titles; it’s about achieving goals.

I also aim to be a leader who creates an environment to inspire other colleagues.

Indira Gandhi – Ex-Prime Minister of India

A fearless and visionary leader, a doting daughter, a faithful wife and adorable mother - she played her roles diligently in every walk of life. She dared to be different and was determined to work hard and make sacrifices for the nation’s progress.

The lessons I learnt from her is never to be afraid to carve your own path.

Why does inclusion matter to you?

Inclusion at workplace is important as it gives a strong sense of connection and belonging and promotes an engaging culture. Inclusion makes one feel engaged, and it automatically increases productivity.

How are you inspiring women to achieve their ambitions at JLL?

I work hard and share my story - my life’s journey and goals with colleagues. Being women, we need to manage the home as well as work. At times, the pressure of meeting targets can be unnerving, but attending to issues at home front is equally important. I try to maintain an equilibrium in both. Crucial projects, assignment, RFP’s, targets, or deadlines mean extended working hours but should not leave us emotionally drained. It is important to enjoy the best of both the worlds.

I share my time-tested methods with all women colleagues and candidly talk about my mistakes and learnings.

Most important is to have a vision for oneself and a solid plan to achieve those goals, which I encourage every woman to have in place.

Luckily, at JLL, we have multiple initiatives for women employees. And this is something I make sure to talk with all women who have recently joined the firm.

Lastly, tough times never last, tough people do.

I believe women are the god’s beautiful creation with fire in the belly, nerves of iron and spirit soaring high.
